Common documents we notarize

Titles, sales and DMV forms.

  • North Carolina vehicle titles (seller signatures)
  • Bills of sale
  • Title reassignment sections
  • Odometer disclosure statements
  • Motorcycle, trailer and RV titles
  • Lien release documents
  • Affidavits and other DMV forms that include a notary section

Important: don't sign in advance. Every seller signs in front of the notary, exactly as the name is printed on the title, with a current government-issued photo ID.

Appointment preparation

Car title notarization checklist.

Use this checklist before your appointment. Completing it doesn't guarantee DMV acceptance.

We can't notarize an open title (buyer left blank) unless the buyer is a used-car dealer or an insurance company, and the notary can't fill in the title for you.

Before you sign

Common title mistakes to avoid.

  • Signing before the notary is there to watch.
  • Leaving the buyer, odometer, damage disclosure or delivery date blank.
  • Signing a name that doesn't match the name printed on the title.
  • Forgetting a second seller listed on the title.
  • Assuming notarization completes the ownership transfer. You still visit the DMV.

What the notary can and can't do

The notary identifies each signer and completes the notarial certificate. The notary doesn't fill in the title, decide ownership or guarantee DMV acceptance. For questions about which forms you need, contact the NC Division of Motor Vehicles.

After notarization

Next steps with the NC DMV.

Notarization is one step in the sale. Afterward, the documents go to the NC Division of Motor Vehicles or a license plate agency, according to their current requirements.

  • Take the notarized title and any supporting documents.
  • Pay the applicable taxes and fees.
  • Apply for the new title and registration as the DMV instructs.
  • Keep copies of your paperwork.

Questions

Car title notarization FAQs.

Can you notarize a car title for a private sale?

Yes. Selling a vehicle in North Carolina usually means the seller's signature on the title must be notarized. Every seller listed on the title signs in front of the notary, exactly as the name is printed.

Can a car title be notarized online?

No. North Carolina titles are paper, and the seller must appear in person with the notary. A witness can't swear for a seller who isn't there.

Can you notarize a title with the buyer left blank?

No. North Carolina rules don't allow an open title to be notarized unless the buyer is a used-car dealer or an insurance company.

Who fills in the title?

You do, before the notarization. The buyer's name and address, odometer reading, damage disclosure and delivery date must be filled in by someone other than the notary.

I made a mistake on the title. Can it be fixed?

A first- or middle-name error can be corrected with a single line through it and the correction. A mistake in the last name voids the assignment; contact the NC DMV.

Do I need a bill of sale?

It depends on the transaction. Ask the NC DMV which forms your sale needs. If you bring a bill of sale with a notary section, we can notarize it too.

What identification do I need?

A current government-issued photo ID for each seller, such as a driver's license, state ID or passport.

Can you come to my home, office or dealership?

Yes, in Mecklenburg, Union, Cabarrus, Gaston, Catawba, Rowan, Iredell and Lincoln counties. Tell us the address when you book, and we'll confirm availability and the travel fee in writing before we travel.

How much does car title notarization cost?

$10 per notarized signature. Two sellers means two signatures, or $20. Mobile visits add a travel fee at the IRS business mileage rate, agreed in writing before we travel.

Where do I go after the document is notarized?

To the NC Division of Motor Vehicles or a license plate agency, following their current instructions for titling, registration, taxes and fees.
